Up to one-in-eight women will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection has a crucial influence on the outcome of breast cancer and mammography screening has been found the single most effective way of providing it. Organized mammography screening can lower the risk of dying for breast cancer up to 35%. When caught early, breast cancer can also be treated with minimal surgery.

Breast examination types
  • Screening mammography is used to detect the development of breast cancer as early as possible
  • Breast Self Exam (BSE) and physical examination by the doctor are also important ways for early detection of breast cancer
  • Diagnostic mammography focuses on obtaining more information on a specific finding. Other breast imaging methods may also be used for diagnosis (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI))
  • Biopsy is used to obtain tissue samples for microscopic analysis. Breast cancer diagnosis is always confirmed by biopsy results

In a mammography examination
  • Examinations are performed with dedicated mammography X-ray units
  • The breast is compressed between two plates and exposed to X-rays
  • Typically two X-ray images of each breast are taken in minimum
  • Examination time is approximately 5 minutes with total of four images
  • Images are reviewed by experienced radiologist(s)
  • The X-ray dose is less than in one chest X-ray examination
